My Buddy’s First Play With a Paver

My Buddy’s First Play With a Paver - Richard Crown

My friend has been searching for a new career for a while now. He’s grown somewhat dissatisfied with working in the office over the last couple of months and has increasingly expressed his desire to get out there and get his hands dirty, as he likes to say. I don’t really understand it myself as I would think he would be more than happy with an office job that keeps him indoors and out of the cold. Plus he’s very good at what he does. Still, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do and it seems that he has convinced himself that going into construction is the way to go. It's not the most sparkling of career move in my opinion, but then again my job right now is to grab a beer with him every so often and give him some encouragement, which I’m more than happy to do.

I’m still not sure what’s prompted this decision in his mind but he has had to start all the way at the bottom again. He’s managed to snag an apprenticeship with another friend of mine who is going to show him the trade a little bit and let him try it out for himself. They’ve been working on a road building project for the last couple of days and, if truth be told, I haven’t seen my friend this happy in months. He really seems to be in his element. Maybe this sort of work is his true calling after all.

We’ve been hanging out a lot over the last couple of days while he gets acclimatised to the new job. He keeps going on about how much fun it is to lay the blacktop paving every day and how he adores operating the paver. I had no idea what either of those things are. Apparently, blacktop paving is another name for the asphalt that construction workers lay on the road. Who knew?

It’s the paver that really seems to fascinate him. He gets to ride it for a couple of hours a day, laying down the blacktop paving before a roller follows him and compacts it into the roads that we all drive over every day. My friend seems to be satisfied with the work and apparently it’s a good change from crunching numbers. His only goal right now is to get a ride in the roller so I think it’s fair to say that this career change is going well for him.
